The Dionysus became one of the defining bags of Gucci’s great reinvention under Alessandro Michele. Introduced at his first women’s collection for the house in 2015, the design helped move luxury fashion away from the restrained minimalism of the early 2010s and toward the romantic, eccentric maximalism that would dominate the second half of the decade. Its mythological tiger-head closure references the Greek god Dionysus, while unusual color combinations, embroidery and decorative finishes turned the silhouette into a canvas for Michele’s new vision of Gucci.

More than a seasonal handbag, the Dionysus helped establish the modern idea that a heritage house could mine its archives without looking nostalgic. Today, the early and unusual variations from this period feel like snapshots of a major fashion shift—and the saturated jewel-tone colorblocking on this version makes it particularly representative of that moment.
